Starting up

Hey Everyone.

I am looking at starting up my own model railway but am a little unsure as to where to start...
Should I get a a railway and scenic kit to start with and see how that goes and then expand on that or would it be better to start smaller and then slowly grow. Any input would be of a great help.

I'm not suffering from insanity, I enjoy every second of it!

I would start small ( what scale are you looking at ) . In N scale i'd say 8 x 4 , this gives you loads of room and you wont become bored just watching a train go round and round
Atlas has a good track plan book with 7 easy to medium level track designs
I brought it and built one and it worked great.
I think Hobby City has a copy.
It lets you work on the scenery and develop skills in that area.
Once I had finished it , i sold it as I had learn't so much and have now moved on to a bigger layout that is 1/3 done but already i can see the improvement on the level of scenery detail.
A small layout will also give you the opportunity to see what you want in your next layout, there's loads of options- double mainline , Point to Point , switching layout , Steam era or diesel or in my case both , as i love steam .
Read loads and look at the internet.
It also depends on the room you have. As i only have a room the size of a single garage i went N Scale as I wanted trains that were 15-20 cartages long and didn't arrive in one town before leaving the other.
If I had the room for a bigger layout I would have gone HO , theres more varity available in NZ with a greater selection of steam. But for a large layout you would be looking at 20ft by 20ft.
My N Scale layout is roughly 10 ft by 16 ft and to build that in HO would be 20ft by 30ft.
Any questions just ask.

But wahtever you choose I guarantee it will be fun and rewarding.
