| I would start small ( what scale are you looking at ) . In N scale i'd say 8 x 4 , this gives you loads of room and you wont become bored just watching a train go round and round
Atlas has a good track plan book with 7 easy to medium level track designs
I brought it and built one and it worked great.
I think Hobby City has a copy.
It lets you work on the scenery and develop skills in that area.
Once I had finished it , i sold it as I had learn't so much and have now moved on to a bigger ... |

I model both steam and Diesel.
I have a 1/3 completed layout in the garage which is Power by DCC and based mainly on
Santa Fe stock
My current roster is 7 Loco's and around 60 pieces of rolling stock, mainly Micro trains
My steam engines are one each of Bachmann 2-8-0 spectrum and a Kato Mikado.
